Sleep is something we all do, yet scientists are still discovering just how important it is.

A recent study led by researchers at the University of Arizona examined information from more than 23,000 adults to explore whether certain everyday sleep habits were associated with changes seen on brain MRI scans. Their findings contribute to a growing body of research suggesting that sleep may play an important role in healthy brain ageing.

Three sleep patterns attracted attention

The researchers examined a wide range of sleep behaviours.

After accounting for other health and lifestyle factors, three patterns remained consistently associated with changes visible on brain imaging:

  • sleeping regularly outside the commonly recommended range of seven to nine hours;
  • frequent daytime napping; and
  • ongoing difficulty sleeping.

Importantly, the study identified statistical associations. It did not demonstrate that these sleep patterns directly caused the changes observed on brain scans.

Why scientists are interested in sleep

Sleep is far from a passive state.

During sleep the brain remains highly active, helping to organise memories, regulate many biological processes and support normal brain function. Researchers also continue to investigate how sleep contributes to the brain's natural maintenance systems, although many aspects of these processes are still being explored.

Because sleep influences so many systems within the body, even relatively small changes in sleep quality may have effects that accumulate gradually over many years.

Looking at long-term patterns

One restless night is unlikely to define anyone's future health.

Instead, scientists are increasingly interested in the patterns that develop over months and years.

This broader perspective is becoming common across many areas of health research. Just as nutrition, physical activity and social connection are studied over long periods, sleep is now being viewed as another important contributor to lifelong wellbeing rather than simply how we feel the next morning.
